Where this is
This site is in the Sacramento Ranger District of Lincoln National Forest, in Otero County, New Mexico -- the forested Sacramento Mountains west of Cloudcroft. On much of the district you can camp dispersed within 300 feet of a road with no permit, but you have to check the district's Motor Vehicle Use Map for where it's allowed, and several canyons (Rio Penasco, Bluff Springs, Wills Canyon, Agua Chiquita) are closed to camping through August 2026. It is high country; carry your own water. Forest, district, and county are confirmed against USFS data; the on-the-ground details are still unverified.
