When the high country opens and closes

The elevation on a camp page is a calendar, not scenery. Of the 13,523 camps mapped here, 12,025 carry a USGS ground elevation, and the median is a mild 4,165 ft. But 3,368 of them sit at 6,000 ft or higher, 700 at 8,000 or higher, and 276 at 9,000 or higher — 229 of those last on national forest, 145 of them in Colorado. For that top slice the elevation number is the best single predictor you have of when you can get there, and the worst possible thing to mistake for a date. A camp at 9,000 ft is not a colder version of a camp at 4,000 ft. It is a camp that does not exist for a large part of the year.

What 9,000 feet costs you: the snow-free window

The Natural Resources Conservation Service runs automated SNOTEL stations that report snow water equivalent — the water you'd be left with if you melted the pile, which USDA describes as “the amount of water available in the snow.” Five inches of that is five inches of water lying on the ground as a much deeper pile of snow. Pull the 1991–2020 median for three stations sitting within 460 feet of each other in elevation and the whole point of this note falls out:

Hannagan Meadows, Arizona — 9,030 ft. Median snowpack peaks March 3. Bare by April 14. Snow back on the ground about November 15.
Bear Lake, Colorado — 9,490 ft. Peaks April 19. Bare by June 7. Snow back about October 25.
Beartooth Lake, Wyoming — 9,360 ft. Peaks May 11. Bare by June 28. Snow back about October 7.

Same elevation, near enough. Seven months of open ground in Arizona, four and a half in Colorado, three and a third in Wyoming. Ten weeks separate the Arizona melt-out from the Wyoming one at a difference of 330 feet. The practical consequence: 9,000 ft is not a season. Nine thousand feet plus a latitude is a season.

June versus September, in numbers

Take the same three stations on June 1. Median snow water equivalent: Arizona 0.0 in, Colorado 5.0 in, Wyoming 18.4 in. Read that last one twice — on the first of June the Wyoming site is still holding more water in its snowpack than the Colorado site held on the first of April (16.8 in). By June 15 Colorado is at zero and Wyoming is still at 10.2 in. Now take September 15: all three read 0.0. That is the honest shape of the high-country year. June is the coin flip and September is the sure thing. If you have one week and you want a 9,000 ft camp with the least argument about it, take the week after Labor Day, not the week after Memorial Day. What you trade for it is cold nights and a short fuse before the snow comes back — on the Wyoming site, three weeks.

The catch: the median is not your year

“Half the years” means half the years are worse. The Park Service publishes the opening and closing dates for the Tioga Road over Tioga Pass — “9,945 feet (3,031 m) above sea level” — going back to 1915, alongside the April 1 snowpack for that year, and across the 46 seasons from 1980 through 2025 that road opened as early as April 29 (1988, snowpack 31% of normal) and as late as July 22 (2023, snowpack 244%). Eighty-four days of spread on one road. The Park Service's own published figures for 2004–2023 are a median opening of May 23 and an average of May 31; the median closing is November 14. But it closed as early as October 17 in 2004, and there are seasons in that table where it ran into December and one listed as closing January 17. Yosemite is blunt about the forecast: “Predicting when these roads will open is not possible, even in late spring, because April and May weather significantly affects plowing progress,” and “Plowing is just the beginning! Plowing crews must safely navigate through multiple avalanche zones. In addition to several feet of snow, downed trees and rockfall often need to be cleared from the road.” If a national park with a dedicated plow crew won't guess, don't guess about your forest spur.

The gate is a separate question from the snow

Snow melting off a road does not open the road. A seasonal closure is an order, and the dates vary by unit — and by district, and by road. Some are pegged to elevation: the San Juan National Forest has said “The Columbine Ranger District will begin opening low elevation roads May 1,” while “Upper elevation and backcountry roads will be opened June 1st or as conditions permit.” Some are pegged to the calendar and then moved: the Stanislaus National Forest extended a seasonal closure on two high-elevation roads “June 1, 2026, through June 15, 2026” because “snow accumulations across some high elevation forest roads continue to prevent safe travel,” adding that the order “may be partially or wholly terminated prior to June 15th” if the roads clear. And some have nothing to do with snow at all — the San Juan also closes roads to “protect critical habitat for deer and elk in winter and early spring”; those “will open May 1” whatever your snowpack is doing. Check the unit, not the season. Where those dates live for your road is the subject of reading a forest MVUM, and MVUM is the short version.

The climb is a change of season on a single afternoon

Grand Canyon puts the rule of thumb plainly: “In general, temperature increases 5.5°F with each 1,000 feet loss in elevation.” Run that backwards from our median 4,165 ft camp to a 9,000 ft one and you have climbed out of roughly 26°F — a genuine change of season between breakfast and dinner, on the same tank of gas. Rocky Mountain is direct about what lives at the top of that climb: “At higher points, like Bear Lake, Trail Ridge Road, or Longs Peak, it may snow even in July,” “afternoon thunderstorms and wind are normal patterns,” and “always be prepared for temperature drops of 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit.” Even in the good months the daily swing is the story: “Summer days in July and August often reach the 70's or 80's and drop into the 40's at night.” Yellowstone, most of which lies above 6,000 ft, says the same thing with fewer words — “expect big temperature swings, rain, or snow during every month of the year,” and “nights are usually cool and temperatures may drop below freezing at higher elevations.” Pack for the elevation you're sleeping at, not the town you shopped in: cold-weather camping for what that costs you, altitude camping for what the thin air does on top of it.

Where people go wrong

Reading elevation as a national calendar. It isn't one. Latitude moved our three 9,000 ft sites ten weeks apart, and aspect will move two spots on the same mountain by weeks — a south-facing road bakes out while a north-facing switchback three hundred yards away holds a drift. Sequoia & Kings Canyon puts the same idea sideways: “Temperatures can vary 20 to 30 degrees as you change elevation. There may be spring flowers in the foothills and snow in the Giant Forest at the same time.”

Treating April 1 as the top of the snowpack everywhere. USDA explains why that date is the reference: “Historically, April 1 has been used as a consistent date to reference among peaks as it is considered the peak or near-peak of snowpack.” It's a good reference and a bad promise. Our Colorado site's median peak is April 19 and our Wyoming site's is May 11 — on April 1 that one has six more weeks of accumulation ahead of it. Reading a strong April 1 number as “it's downhill from here” is how people book the second week of June.

Assuming snow is the only thing between you and the camp. It isn't, and the melt is its own hazard. The San Juan warns that “even if snow levels are not deep, wheeled motorized use can damage road surfaces during freezing and thawing periods,” and that visitors “should be prepared to encounter system roads that are impassable due to snowdrifts, waterlogged roads, down trees or other debris.” The week after melt-out is often the worst driving of the year — see how the road changes with the season and getting unstuck.

Assuming a plowed highway means an open spur. Tioga gets a park plow crew starting “on or around April 15.” Grand Canyon's North Rim gets a state highway: SR 67 is closed by the Arizona DOT “usually by December 1,” and even after the snow goes the Park Service “does not unlock the entrance station gate for public vehicle access until North Rim visitor facilities open up for the season in mid-May.” Your forest road gets none of that. Whether it's even built for the attempt is the maintenance level, and what it asks of your rig is high clearance vs 4WD.

What our elevation number is, and what it isn't

The figure on a camp page is a USGS ground elevation at the coordinate — a real, checkable number about a point on the earth. It is not a statement that the road is open, that the gate is up, or that anybody has been there this year. And 1,498 of our published camps have no elevation on file at all. That is a hole in our data, not a low camp: no number means nobody resolved one, and you should assume nothing from the blank. Reading your camp page lays out where each instrument on that page stops. The SNOTEL medians above carry their own caveat, printed on the data itself: “The data you have obtained from this automated Natural Resources Conservation Service database are subject to revision regardless of indicated Quality Assurance level.” And those stations are sited to measure snow, not to be your campsite — a station in a sheltered forest opening holds snow longer than an exposed road cut and less long than a shaded north-facing drift. Use them to know whether this year is early or late, not to pick a day.

What to do tonight

Read the elevation on the camp page first. Below about 6,000 ft, snow is usually not the thing that decides your trip. At 8,000, ask the season question before anything else. At 9,000 and up, assume a window and go find its edges. Then: pull the unit's current road status and MVUM and read the seasonal dates for your segment — not for the forest, for the segment, which is the trap covered in reading a Forest Service road number. Find the nearest SNOTEL on the NRCS map and compare this year's snow water equivalent against the median for today's date; that one comparison tells you whether you are running early or late, which no almanac can. Call the ranger district and ask about your road by number. And pick a fallback camp two or three thousand feet lower, because the honest version of a June trip to 9,000 ft is that you may be spending the night at 6,500 instead.

The honest summary: elevation buys you cool nights and thin crowds, and it charges you in months. At 9,000 feet you are renting the ground from roughly the start of summer to the start of fall, the lease dates move by weeks every year, they move by months depending on where in the country you are, and the gate across the road answers to a district ranger rather than to the snow. September is the widest-open door in that year. June is a question you have to ask the unit, one road at a time.
