Does Starlink work in the woods?

Yes — far more often than you would think from reading about it. Dave has had Starlink since SpaceX introduced it and lived out of a truck camper on public land for four years on one dish. Several hundred nights out. He can count on one hand the places he could not get connected.

That is one person's experience, not a guarantee, and it is worth saying plainly up front because most of what is written about satellite internet and trees is written by people selling something or by people who tried it once in the wrong spot.

The cable is the tool, not the dish

This is the whole trick and almost nobody says it: you do not need a clear view of sky above your camp. You need one within reach of your cable.

The cable on Dave's unit runs 150 feet. A campsite tucked under pines will very often have a meadow, a road cut, a gravel turnaround or a south-facing slope inside that radius. You park where you want to sleep, then walk the dish out to the hole in the canopy. People who report failure have usually set the dish down next to the rig, seen the obstruction warning, and stopped there.

Run the check before you unhitch, level, or set up camp. Moving a dish is easy. Moving a camp is not.

What Starlink itself says about trees

Worth reading in their words rather than ours. From the Starlink Mini installation guide, read 20 September 2026:

“Your Starlink needs a clear view of the sky so it can stay connected with satellites as they move overhead. Objects that obstruct the connection between your Starlink and the satellite, such as a tree branch, pole, or roof, will cause service interruptions.”

“Use the obstruction tool in the App to ensure you have selected a suitable mounting location.”

Note what that does and does not say. It says obstructions cause interruptions — not that the service fails. In practice, partial cover means brief drops rather than no connection: enough to annoy a video call, rarely enough to stop work. The obstruction tool in the app is the honest arbiter, and it takes a couple of minutes.

Under trees

A single branch crossing the dish's view is the common case, and it is usually survivable — you get short interruptions as satellites pass behind it. Two things make it much better:

Heavy woods

Dense unbroken canopy with no clearing inside cable reach is the case that actually defeats it, and it does happen — it is most of that handful Dave can count on one hand. Deep timber in the Pacific Northwest and the Appalachians are the usual culprits. Narrow canyons are the other one: the walls take out the sky even where the trees do not.

If you work from the road and cannot afford to lose a day, the practical answer is to pick camps with a known open feature nearby — a reservoir, a meadow, a burn scar, a gravel pit, a road junction — rather than gambling on a spot deep in timber.

Power, because the dish does not care how pretty your camp is

Dave runs it off batteries and solar, not a generator. A generator will absolutely run a dish, and it is also the thing everybody camped near you can hear. On dispersed public land, assume no hookups of any kind: what you need, you bring. Our note on power when you're boondocking covers the rest.

What we cannot tell you

No campsite on this site carries a canopy score, a sky-view measurement or a satellite-visibility rating. We do not have that data and we are not going to invent it — the same reason 1,008 of our campsites say “unpriced” instead of guessing that they are free.

What we can give you is what the record says about the place before you drive there: whether it is free, whether the agency's season window has it open, whether there is water, a toilet, and how far you will be from fuel and a town. Judge the sky yourself when you are standing in it, with the obstruction tool.
