Boondock power

The autonomy card on this site does honest tank math — water, grey, black, propane, food — and then hands two things straight back to you: your fuel, and your battery. It skips your battery on purpose, because how much power you've got and how fast you burn it swings so wildly from one rig to the next that a general number would be a lie. So off-grid power is yours to meter. It's not hard, but it catches people, because a battery drains quietly and there's no gauge on the site that watches it for you. Here's the plain version of running on battery out there — what pulls it down, what solar really gives you, and the few times a low battery stops being a comfort problem.

Power is a hole the card leaves on purpose

The card counts the things it can do honest math on — gallons of water, a grey tank filling, propane burning down, days of food. It never counts your battery, and it never counts your fuel (the town-run note says the same about the fuel gauge: it isn't part of how long you can stay). That's not because power doesn't matter — it's because your power depends on your exact bank, your solar, and your habits in a way the card can't fake without making something up. So treat the battery like another gauge on the dash you have to read yourself: know roughly where it starts full, know what pulls it down fast, and top it up before it surprises you. The card tells you when water or your tanks will end the stay; the battery is one of the two things it leaves you to watch.

Know what you actually pull

The honest way to size your power isn't a spec sheet — it's watching your own battery across a real day and night and seeing where it sits by morning. A few load classes, no made-up numbers: if you run a 12V fridge, that's the steady, around-the-clock draw sipping the bank all day (plenty of rigs instead run a propane fridge or just a cooler and ice — then keeping food cold isn't a steady bank drain, though a propane fridge still needs a little 12V to run its controls). The small stuff — lights, charging a phone, a fan, the water pump when you use it — adds up slowly and rarely worries anyone; a furnace's blower is heavier than that and climbs in deep cold, when it's running most. The real battery killers are anything that makes heat or cold through an inverter: an electric kettle, a hair dryer, a space heater, a microwave, air conditioning. Those pull many times what your lights do and can flatten a bank in minutes. If a job can be done on propane or by hand instead of off the inverter, that's usually the boondock-friendly move.

Solar is a trickle, not a tap

A solar panel drips your battery back up slowly across the daylight hours — it doesn't hand you a big load on demand, and it does nothing after dark. Treat it as a top-up that stretches your days, not a power source you can lean on. And you rarely get the sticker watts: panels harvest far less in the real world than the number on the box. A low sun angle, shade from a canyon wall or your own awning, dust or pollen or snow on the glass, and especially the short, weak sun of winter all cut the harvest hard — the same season you're often burning more power on a furnace fan. A run of cloudy days can stall solar out almost completely. So plan around the bad-weather stretch, not the blue-sky afternoon, and keep a way to charge that doesn't wait on the sun (next tip).

The number on the battery isn't the number you get

Usable capacity is less than the label, and how much less depends on the chemistry — so take these as rough rules of thumb, not promises. A lead-acid battery (regular or AGM) you generally shouldn't drain much below half before you start shortening its life, so a "100 amp-hour" lead-acid battery is really more like fifty usable. Lithium (LiFePO4) you can safely run much lower, so more of the label is actually yours — a big part of why it's worth the money for staying out. Cold makes all of it worse: a cold battery holds less and gives it up slower, and a cold lithium battery may even refuse to charge at all to protect itself — there's more on how cold bends the plan in the cold-weather note. The point isn't the exact percentage — it's don't plan your stay on the full number printed on the case.

Have a top-up that doesn't need the sun

Solar is the quiet, free option, but it leaves you short on a cloudy week, so carry a backup way to charge. If your house battery is wired to take a charge from the engine, driving refills it, so a resupply run or a move to a new spot doubles as a charge — worth folding into the town run. A generator refills a bank fast, with two hard rules. First, safety: never run a generator enclosed or with its exhaust near a window or vent, and never run it for power while you sleep — a generator puts out carbon monoxide exactly like the unvented heaters in the cold-weather note, and CO has no smell and can kill you before you know it's there. Second, courtesy: a generator is loud and you're on shared public land — run it in daylight, keep it short, and don't be the person idling one all evening a couple hundred feet from a neighbor who drove out here for the quiet. Shore power in town — a campground pedestal, a friend's outlet — is the easy full charge when you're passing through anyway.

Losing power is usually a comfort problem — until it isn't

Most of the time a low battery just means dim lights, nothing charging, and an early night — annoying, not dangerous. But it crosses into safety in a few rig-specific ways worth knowing before they bite. If your fridge runs on 12V, a dead battery means a warming fridge and food you may have to throw out — a propane fridge or a cooler doesn't have that failure. If your drinking water comes out only through an electric pump, an empty battery can cut you off from water the tank still holds — the same trap a freeze pulls, and one the card won't warn you about because it's still counting that water toward your days. Don't quietly wire your carbon-monoxide detector to your house battery in your head, either — keep a detector that runs on its own power (its own batteries, or a backup) so a dead bank can't also kill your alarm. And your phone is your call for help; keep a power bank or charge it off the vehicle so a flat house battery doesn't leave you with a dead phone in a dead zone. None of these are reasons to fear a low battery — they're reasons to watch it like the other gauges and top up before you get there.

One honest split to end on, same as the cold page: the tools here don't watch your power for you.
