Where I've been, and whose land it was
Every photograph in the library that carries its own GPS, placed on the lower 48 and tested against the boundary of every National Forest and Grassland we hold. The question it answers: how much of this was public land?

What this is, and what it is not. A photograph's coordinate is where the camera was, which is not always where the subject was — a long lens from a road shoulder outside a boundary reads as "neither". 285 of these points were inferred from a neighbouring shot's timestamp rather than recorded by the camera; they are drawn the same and flagged in the data.
Distances are straight-line miles to the nearest boundary segment, like every other distance on this site. Roads run longer.
Not everything is here. The library holds 16,969 photographs; 10,725 carry a coordinate and 3,167 of those fall outside the lower 48 — Alaska, Hawaii and abroad — so they are counted here and drawn nowhere. The 3574 the index flags private were dropped before this payload was written.
Boundaries are the 130 USFS administrative units cached for the forest pages (110 forests, 20 grasslands), tested with point-in-polygon, holes honoured.
