The land manager lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

FREE primitive camping at Baker's Field in the village of Wonewoc, Juneau County, southwest-central Wisconsin -- right on the '400' State Trail, one of the classic old-railroad bike trails. Wisconsin's own state tourism site says 'Free public camping is available on the 400 Trail with a firepit and free wood,' and Wonewoc runs the only public campgrounds on the trail between Elroy and Reedsburg. The camping is primitive (fire ring, firewood, a covered shelter and restrooms nearby; small RVs only, roughly 15 ft) -- carry in what you need and pack out your trash. This is the honest camp-free, shop-and-eat-in-town spirit: the village welcomes trail travelers hoping they'll spend a little in town. One thing to know: if you plan to RIDE the 400 Trail you need a Wisconsin State Trail Pass (cyclists 16+), but that's a trail-riding pass, not a fee to camp -- the campsite is free. Please confirm the current rules (nights allowed, RV size) with the Village of Wonewoc (608-464-3114) before you go, be self-contained, and leave it better than you found it.

How it was placed
Source: Travel Wisconsin -- the STATE's own tourism site -- travelwisconsin.com/road-multi-use-trails/bakers-field-recreation-area-and-campground-196321 (read 2026-07-27): 'Free public camping is available on the 400 Trail with a firepit and free wood' (explicit no-fee statement, official state source). Village of Wonewoc's own page wonewocwisc.com/tourism-and-recreation/ (read 2026-07-27) confirms 'Camping is also available ... at Baker's Field' and that Wonewoc has 'the only public campgrounds on the trail between Elroy and Reedsburg' (establishes a real village park where camping is allowed; the village page itself prints no price). Coordinate 43.657554,-90.224850 = OSM node/7156176780 'Baker's Field' tourism=camp_site fee=no (api.openstreetmap.org, read 2026-07-27); the Village-operated camping polygon OSM way/362607380 (operator='Village of Wonewoc', fee=no) has an interior centroid 43.657909,-90.225805 ~0.06 mi away = same spot. Nominatim reverse -> Wonewoc, Juneau County, WI. fee=0, dispersed=0, camp_type NULL, water='yes' (restrooms/park water), status pending. Note: the '400' State Trail requires a WI State Trail Pass to BIKE (age 16+), which is a cycling trail-use pass, NOT an entry/access fee to reach or camp at the village park -- camping itself is free. Ingest 2026-07-27.
