SEASONAL CLOSURE: 'Oct 14 to May 7' (the table's 'Seasonal closure dates' column -- these are the dates it is CLOSED). Reservations: not reservable -- first-come, first-served. DNR DESCRIPTION (from the agency's own recreation-search record): Situated along the northern shore of Black Lake, this rustic campground offers great opportunities for paddlesports and fishing. It is located in Cheboygan County, 11 miles north of Onaway. This campground is managed by Cheboygan State Park . DNR LONGER DESCRIPTION: This rustic campground sits along the northern shores of Black Lake, which is Michigan’s seventh largest inland lake. It is surrounded by rolling hills and lush hardwood forests. Black Lake is a shallow lake and provides great opportunities for paddlesports and fishing. Northern pike and muskellunge can be found in Black Lake. This popular campground fills up quickly in the summer, especially on weekends. In the lower unit, use of motor vehicles (other than street-licensed vehicles such as cars, trucks or street legal motorcycles) is not allowed. ORVs must remain on trailers if in the lower unit. The upper unit is considered an ORV campground and is open to ORV use only for entering and leaving the campground to access the trail. There are 17 sites for tent, small and large trailer use. Camping is limited to a 15-day maximum stay. Amenities include vault toilets and potable water from a NEAREST TOWN: Onaway, about 11.0 miles, per the DNR description quoted above. A responsible adult (18 years or older) must register and sleep at the campsite each night. Campsites are for overnight stays. To give everyone a chance to enjoy state forest campgrounds during peak season (May 15-Sept. 15), the maximum stay is 15 nights. Once you hit that limit, you'll need to take a 5-night break before returning to the same park.' Also checked against the 82 Michigan 'later' leads (no pair under 300 m) and against the other 141 leads in this batch. INDEPENDENT (NON-AGENCY) CORROBORATION OF POSITION: an OpenStreetMap query run this review (Overpass, tourism=camp_site or caravan_site within 900 m of the stored coordinates) returns a camping feature 140 m away named 'Black Lake State Forest Campground-Lower'. OSM is not an authority on fees or opening dates, but it is a source with no connection to the Michigan DNR, and it agrees that a campground physically exists at this location. BLACK LAKE CLUSTER CHECKED THIS REVIEW: this batch holds three Black Lake campgrounds in Cheboygan County and two of them are only 170 m apart, which is exactly the pattern that usually means a duplicate. They are not duplicates. The DNR amenity table lists 'Black Lake State Forest Campground Upper' (35 sites), 'Black Lake State Forest Campground Lower' (17 sites) and 'Black Lake Trail Camp State Forest Campground' (8 sites, equestrian) as three separate rows, each with its own GIS point and its own description: the Upper campground sits 'on a bluff overlooking the northern shore of Black Lake' while the Lower one sits 'along the northern shore' -- they are stacked vertically, bluff and shoreline, which is why they are close in plan view. OpenStreetMap likewise maps 'Black Lake State Forest Campground-Upper' and 'Black Lake State Forest Campground-Lower' as two separate features. Note for the publisher: this row's GIS label for the Upper campground is plain 'Black Lake State Forest Campground' with no 'Upper', which reads confusingly next to its '-Lower' sibling; consider titling it 'Black Lake (Upper)'. REVIEW CAVEATS THAT APPLY TO THE WHOLE BATCH: (1) This is a desk verification against agency publications, NOT a field visit -- nobody from this project has stood at this campground. (2) I did NOT verify current-season gate status, road conditions, fire restrictions or burn bans; the earlier fire's 'NOT CHECKED' note about burn permits still stands. (3) The DNR's own 'Campground closing and opening dates' link embedded in its recreation-search records (.../PRD/Rates/StatewideSFCGFacilityandAmenityMatrix.pdf) returned HTTP 404 when I tried it today, so opening/closing dates could only be verified from the amenity table's 'Seasonal closure dates' column, not from that matrix. (4) The potable-water claim remains the DNR's claim about a developed hand-pump well. No natural water at or near this site is claimed to be potable. DECISION: APPROVED. Both DNR datasets still carry this campground today under the same name, at the same coordinates, with the recorded fee, managing unit, county and seasonal-closure entry; the rule text quoted above is still live on the DNR's pages; and it is not a coordinate duplicate of anything published, held or pending. Setting status='approved' -- publish_camps.py remains the only route to 'published'.
