The land manager lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

FREE primitive camping (no fee, first-come) at a small Keokuk County Conservation river access on the North Skunk River, on Highway 149 about two to three miles south of Sigourney, just north of the river bridge. This is a 3-acre boat-access area, NOT a developed campground: expect a cement boat ramp, ample parking, and a picnic table -- no electricity, no showers, no drinking water, so come self-contained and bring your own water. The county conservation board's own listing says plainly it offers 'free primitive camping' and that 'primitive camping is allowed at this area,' and the access is posted open 4:30 AM to 10:30 PM year round -- read those hours as general access hours, not a bar on the sanctioned overnight camping the county itself advertises. It is a fishing/paddling spot (channel and flathead catfish on the North Skunk), so it can be quiet mid-week and busier on summer weekends. This is the free outlier in Keokuk County's system -- developed county parks like Lake Belva Deer charge -- so do not assume the free rule travels to them. River accesses like this are informally managed and a county can start charging or change the rules, and we have not visited, so confirm the current rules with Keokuk County Conservation (641-622-3757) before you rely on it. Free camping is a courtesy: pack it in, pack it out, keep it quiet, and be a good guest so it stays free for the next traveler.

Confidence
Likely — The record is good enough to put a pin on, but thin in places. Treat the details as a starting point, not gospel.
How it was placed
Keokuk County Conservation Board river access on the North Skunk River, Highway 149 ~2-3 mi south of Sigourney, just north of the river bridge. FREE primitive camping stated verbatim on the CCB's OWN portal page mycountyparks.com/County/Keokuk/Park/Checauqua-River-Access: 'Access to the North Skunk River with free primitive camping' and 'Primitive camping is allowed at this area' (mycountyparks.com is the official internet presence for all 99 Iowa County Conservation Boards; re-read twice this fire, identical). Corroborated by the Keokuk County Conservation parks index at keokukcounty.iowa.gov (lists Checauqua as one of its 7 managed accesses, links to the same portal page). COORDINATE is authoritative and independent of the free source: USGS NWIS stream gage 05472500 'North Skunk River near Sigourney, IA' at the Hwy 149 / North Skunk River bridge = 41.30084444,-92.2046222 (NAD83); the access sits immediately (~0.05 mi) north of this gaged bridge, ~2.2 mi south of Sigourney center. MED not HIGH: single official channel (mycountyparks), informally-managed river access, unvisited. Manager Keokuk County Conservation Board 641-622-3757. Standing-mission ingest 2026-07-28. --- NIGHTSHIFT REVIEW 2026-08-21 (fire 1220, leftover backlog) --- HOLDS UP. Re-read the Keokuk County Conservation Board's own portal page at mycountyparks.com this fire -- that portal is the official internet presence for all 99 Iowa County Conservation Boards. Still verbatim: 'Access to the North Skunk River with free primitive camping'. The page also still publishes hours -- 'Open 4:30 A.M. to 10:30 P.M year round' -- which is worth carrying onto the page and was not in the original note. The operator names the price itself ('free'), which is stronger than most of this batch. COORDINATE unchanged and still independent of the free source: USGS NWIS stream gage 05472500 'North Skunk River near Sigourney, IA' at the Hwy 149 bridge. Still MEDIUM for the reason recorded at ingest -- a single official channel, an informally-managed river access, unvisited. Manager Keokuk County Conservation Board 641-622-3757. APPROVED.
