DNR DESCRIPTION (from the agency's own recreation-search record): Situated on the banks of the Fox River, this rustic campground offers great opportunities for fishing and hiking. Located in Schoolcraft County, 8 miles north of Seney. This campground is managed by Indian Lake State Park . DNR LONGER DESCRIPTION: This historic, rustic campground was previously a working fish hatchery from 1936 through the 1980s. Each year families and groups of people helped run the fishery and stock the Fox River with brook trout. The young fish were reared in King’s Pond and then transferred to the river. Today, you can explore the area on various footpaths created by anglers and occasionally cross cement slabs previously used for releasing the trout into the stream. In the campground, you will also see storage areas that used to house an artesian well, a root cellar and a storage area for work equipment. In addition to its rich history, this campground is popular among anglers who desire to fish the Fox River. Noted for its wild brook trout fishery, scenery, history and recreational values, the Fox River is managed as a “natural river.” Visitors can hike the Steeb Pathway which is about one mile long and trave NEAREST TOWN: Seney, about 8.0 miles, per the DNR description quoted above.
