New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

FREE primitive camping at ECHO LAKE, the remote backcountry lake in the valley between Overlook and Plattekill Mountains near Woodstock, in the Indian Head Wilderness of New York's CATSKILL Forest Preserve (DEC Region 4, Greene/Ulster Counties). This is a DEC-designated primitive tent site ('Echo Lake -- Campsite 2'), and New York provides it at NO CHARGE: the DEC Indian Head Wilderness page lists the fee as 'Free' and the unit as open year-round, first-come first-served. This site is reached only on foot -- roughly a 2.5-mile hike one way (about a 5-mile round trip) from the Overlook Mountain trailhead on Meads Mountain Road near Woodstock, via the Overlook Trail and the 0.7-mile Echo Lake Trail spur down to the lake (a longer ~9-mile round trip from Platte Clove is the alternate route). This is free, first-come Catskill Forest Preserve backcountry (Indian Head Wilderness) -- do NOT confuse it with a reservable fee campground; the nearest paid DEC campgrounds (Devil's Tombstone on Route 214, North-South Lake) are a separate, paid system a few miles away. SEASON / ACCESS: DEC lists Indian Head Wilderness as open YEAR-ROUND and free, but every site here is a backpack/hike in over steep Catskill trails, and the trailhead roads and the notch trails may not be plowed or maintained in winter -- confirm current road, gate and trail status with the Stamford office (607-652-7365) before you go. RULES: this is a designated, first-come first-served free site -- no reservation and no fee. Look for the round yellow DEC 'Camp Here' marker. Standard Catskill Forest Preserve rules apply: camp only at the designated site, keep 150 feet from water/trails/roads unless the marked site itself is closer, and a free Forest Ranger permit is required only if you stay more than 3 nights or camp with a group of 10 or more (arrange it through the DEC Region 4 Stamford Office at (607) 652-7365 (Forest Rangers via 911 or DEC dispatch 1-833-NYS-RANGERS)). This site sits below 2,700 feet, under the 3,500-foot line, so the March 21-December 21 Catskill high-elevation camping ban does not apply here -- but note it DOES bar camping higher up on the Devil's Path in that season; confirm current fire rules on site. This is a primitive backcountry site: expect at most a fire ring -- no privy, no hookups, no showers and no potable water, so carry water or treat what you take from the lake or stream. Pack out all trash, follow Leave No Trace and the DEC fire rules, and store food from bears (this is black-bear country). Confirm current rules, road/trail status and this site's status on the DEC page (dec.ny.gov/places/indian-head-wilderness) or with the Stamford office (607-652-7365) before you go; we have not visited.

Confidence
Researched — The record is detailed and internally consistent, and the coordinates land where the managing agency says this site is.
How it was placed
NY DEC 'Primitive Campsite' GIS layer (https://gisservices.dec.ny.gov/arcgis/rest/services/dil/dil_land_assets_prm_cmp/MapServer/0), ASSET_UID 16237, NAME verbatim 'Campsite 2', ASSET='PRIMITIVE TENT SITE', PUBLICUSE='Y', FACILITY='Indian Head Wilderness', REGION 4 (Stamford office). DESCRIP/NOTES blank; ACCESSIBLE='N' (no accessibility claim). Coordinate is DEC's own point geometry (WGS84), pulled 2026-07-24 via the layer's /query endpoint (outSR=4326). FREE confirmed on dec.ny.gov/places/indian-head-wilderness (Indian Head Wilderness, read 2026-07-24): Fee='Free', open year-round, APSLMP class WILDERNESS; DEC Region 4 Stamford 607-652-7365; corroborated free + backpack-only by cnyhiking.com/IndianHeadWilderness.htm and Wikipedia 'Echo Lake (New York)' (read 2026-07-24). COUNT DISCLOSURE: GIS tags 7 designated PTS at Echo Lake ('Campsite 1-7'), matching the DEC page / cnyhiking / Wikipedia count of '7 tent sites at Echo Lake' exactly; the unit-level page prose of '10 designated primitive tent sites' is Echo Lake's 7 plus the Mink Hollow junction's 3. All 7 Echo Lake sites shipped. APSLMP CLASS = WILDERNESS (no public motor vehicles), so this is a hike-in site, not a drive-up. ACCESS-COST CHECK (guardrail 2): no entry/day-use/parking/launch fee stated, NY has no statewide access pass, and there is NO named sub-area access permit here (checked per the Sundown-WF Peekamoose lesson); only the standard FREE Forest-Ranger permit for >3 nights or 10+ groups. ELEVATION 2088 ft (USGS EPQS, 2026-07-24) -- below the 3,500-ft line, so the Mar 21-Dec 21 Catskill high-elevation camping ban does NOT apply to this site. PAID-NEIGHBOUR GUARD: Devil's Tombstone / North-South Lake fee campgrounds bbox-guarded; this site passes. LIVE-CONDITIONS CHECK (DEC Indian Head Wilderness page, read 2026-07-24): no closure posted against the Echo Lake or Mink Hollow sites. MEASURED GEOMETRY (OpenStreetMap via maps.mail.ru Overpass, 2026-07-24, point-to-vertex on `out geom`): ~167 ft to Echo Lake (OSM); 392 ft to the Echo Lake Trail (OSM); access class 'hike-in' (reached only on foot -- roughly a 2.5-mile hike one way (about a 5-mile round trip) from the Overlook Mountain trailhead on Meads Mountain Road near Woodstock, via the Overlook Trail and the 0.7-mile Echo Lake Trail spur down to the lake (a longer ~9-mile round trip from Platte Clove is the alternate route)). No OSM camp_site node at Echo Lake -- DEC point geometry is the sole coordinate source, corroborated by the well-documented '7 tent sites at Echo Lake' count (DEC page, cnyhiking, Wikipedia). Plus DEC State Land Camping Rules (dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/state-land-rules): designated-site + 150-foot rule, free Forest Ranger permit for stays over 3 nights or 10+ people. Ingest 2026-07-24.

What we don’t know about Echo Lake -- Campsite 2 (Indian Head Wilderness)

A land record can put you within a few meters of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.

Before you go — Echo Lake -- Campsite 2 (Indian Head Wilderness)

Is this page wrong about Echo Lake -- Campsite 2 (Indian Head Wilderness)?

This page was built from a public land record, not from a visit. If you have actually pulled in here and it does not match, that is worth more than anything we can read off a map. Tell Dave what is off — it goes to him, not onto the page.

What did you find? Tick anything that fits.

A reader report is not a fact, and this one will not change a word of this page by itself. Dave reads it and checks it against the agency’s own record, because that record is what this site says. If reader reports are ever shown here they are labelled “reader report, unverified” with the date, and they are never merged into the agency fields.
