Faulkton City Park (Faulkton)

Drive-up · public land · SD · 45.03650, -99.12645
We haven't personally camped here. Everything below is pulled from public land data, USGS maps and OpenStreetMap — a real place on public land, but not field-checked by us. Confirm road conditions, current access, stay limits and fire restrictions before you go.

Faulkton City Park is the closest thing South Dakota has to the Lander, Wyoming deal, and the city says so on its own tourism page: up to FOUR nights free of charge, with donations appreciated. There are six camping spots, first-come first-served, and reservations are not accepted. Each site has an electrical hookup. Water and sewer are NOT run to the individual sites, but there is a water spout by the park bathrooms and a sewer dump station on site, so fill and dump before you settle in. The park is at 904 Park Street, in town on US-212 in Faulk County, so you are walking distance from the businesses the arrangement is meant to support. One thing to watch, because it is easy to misread as unlimited free camping: the free window is four nights. From the fifth night on the city charges $20.00 per night. If you are staying on, budget for it. Donations for the free nights go in the park donation box or at the city office at 105 8th Ave. N. This is the 'camp free, shop local' bargain in its purest form -- the town is betting you will buy fuel, groceries or dinner while you are here, and the donation box is how a free campground stays free. Be a good guest and it stays that way for the next traveler. Town rules change often and we have not visited -- confirm current rules with the city at 605-598-6515 before you go.

  • Mapping is thin out hereAn empty row means nothing is mapped within that radius — not that nothing exists. Small stores, seasonal resorts and single fuel pumps out here often never make it onto the map. Treat these as unconfirmed and ask locally.

How it was placed
Camping rules and price: City of Faulkton official tourism page, https://www.faulktonsd.com/tourism/attractions/city-park , fetched 2026-07-20, which states verbatim "Enjoy up to four (4) nights free of charge, with donations appreciated." and "For stays of five (5) nights or more, a fee of $20.00 per night applies." and "our city park provides six camping spots available on a first-come, first-served basis" and "Each site offers electrical hookups; however, water and sewer connections are not available directly at the campsites." and "Please note that reservations are not accepted." and "Contributions can be made at the park's donation box or at the city office located at 105 8th Ave. N." Address 904 Park Street, Faulkton SD 57438; city office 605-598-6515. Coordinates: OSM way 667759081 'Faulkton City Park', leisure=park. Pin verified INSIDE the park polygon by point-in-polygon test against the way full-node geometry pulled from api.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/way/667759081/full.json (NOT Overpass 'out center'), 2026-07-20. fee=0 reflects the free 4-night window that the city itself offers; the $20/night charge from night five is disclosed plainly in field_note. Not visited.

What we don’t know

A land record can put you within a few metres of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.

Before you go

Been here? Tell us what changed. This page is built from public records, so the fastest way it gets better is somebody who has actually pulled in. Road washed out, site gone, gate locked, or it is exactly as described — all of it useful. Send a report →
