Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

How it was placed
MD DNR Green Ridge State Forest 'Recreation - Camping' page (dnr.maryland.gov/forests/Pages/publiclands/Greenridge/Recreation-Camping.aspx -- 404 to scripted fetches on 2026-09-27, read via the Wayback capture of 2025-11-28): 'There are 100 designated primitive campsites dispersed throughout Green Ridge State Forest that are available to visitors throughout the year by permit. Campers must register for the campsite at the Green Ridge Headquarters prior to occupying the site. There is a $10 per night permit fee for camping.' Sites have 'a picnic table and a fire ring and no other amenities or plumbing.' 'Campfires are permitted except during drought conditions.' Firewood: buy locally or gather on site, do NOT bring your own. DNR visitor guide/map (dnr.maryland.gov/forests/Documents/greenridge/GRSF_VisitorsGuide-Map.pdf, pub. 2017): 'Campsites are first-come, first-serve. Register at forest headquarters upon arrival.' HQ: 28700 Headquarters Drive NE, Flintstone MD (I-68 exit 64), 301-478-3124. NOT STATED by DNR: a stay limit, and any water source -- this row claims no water. Coordinate = OSM node/5026822187 carries site number 68 (name tag). VERIFIED against DNR's own map: every campsite-number label on p.2 of the DNR visitor guide PDF was extracted with its page position and an affine transform was fitted from the 35 OSM pitches that carry a Green Ridge site number (leave-one-out residual median ~130 m, max 496 m, i.e. label-offset scale). This point is 75 m from where DNR's map puts site 68; the next-nearest DNR label is site 69 at 536 m. 34 of the 35 testable numbered OSM pitches agree with DNR's map this way; OSM 'Site 31' did not (nearer DNR's site 29), and OSM 'Site 30' could not be tested (its DNR label has no extractable position) -- neither was ingested. Point-in-polygon: inside MD DNR MD_ProtectedLands/FeatureServer/0 'GREEN RIDGE SF' (DNRType='DNR Owned Property', LandIntere='OWN', ManagedBy='Maryland Forest Service'). County per FCC Census Block API: Allegany County, MD. Access: the point is 39 m from 'Oldtown Orleans Road' OSM highway=unclassified (way/17605579). NOT VERIFIED: whether that road is gated, seasonal, or passable by a passenger car. Nearest town: Little Orleans ~3.6 mi. 'Nearest town' is straight-line distance to the nearest OSM place=city/town/village, NOT a driving distance; in the Potomac valley the nearest named place is often across the river in WV or PA. Ingest 2026-09-27. | REVIEW 2026-09-27 (nightshift-verified, fire 2660): Old DNR URL .../Greenridge/Recreation-Camping.aspx is a genuine 404 now (not bot-blocking: Wayback's own 2026-06-23 capture of it also recorded 404) -- DNR moved the text. The live page dnr.maryland.gov/forests/Pages/publiclands/Greenridge/recreation-trails.aspx (200 today) says: 'approximately 100 primitive campsites distributed throughout the forest. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring.' 'Standard site: $10 per night' / 'Group site: $20 per night'. NEW since the ingest note: 'Roads leading to campsites are gravel or dirt. Four-wheel drive may be required depending on conditions.' Landing page .../western_greenridgeforest.aspx (200): self-registration 'at the outdoor kiosk when the office is closed' for camping permits, 'Cash or check only', and a posted advisory 'Some roads and campsites may be temporarily closed following a recent flood event. Contact headquarters for current conditions.' It names no site, so it is recorded in rules_json.closure_status and NOT read as a closure of this site. Site-number re-check against a SECOND, NEWER DNR map, dnr.maryland.gov/forests/documents/grsf_map.pdf (created 2026-04-14, modified 2026-06-25; a scan with no text layer, so NOT the 2017 guide the ingest fire used): rendered at 300 dpi, georeferenced by hand from circled site labels (fit started from 4 labels; sites 1, 14, 48, 51, 70 and 100 were then PREDICTED from it and found where predicted), and the circled number at this row's pin read by eye: '68' at the pin. OSM node still live, unmoved, tags unchanged. Point-in-polygon re-run today: MD_ProtectedLands 'GREEN RIDGE SF' (Maryland Forest Service). Duplicate check on COORDINATES: nearest approved/published camp is row 16946 'Devils Alley hiker-biker campsite (C&O Canal towpath mile 14' at 3486 m -- not a duplicate. DECISION: approved.

What we don’t know about Green Ridge State Forest primitive campsite 68

A land record can put you within a few meters of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.

Before you go — Green Ridge State Forest primitive campsite 68

Is this page wrong about Green Ridge State Forest primitive campsite 68?

This page was built from a public land record, not from a visit. If you have actually pulled in here and it does not match, that is worth more than anything we can read off a map. Tell Dave what is off — it goes to him, not onto the page.

What did you find? Tick anything that fits.

A reader report is not a fact, and this one will not change a word of this page by itself. Dave reads it and checks it against the agency’s own record, because that record is what this site says. If reader reports are ever shown here they are labelled “reader report, unverified” with the date, and they are never merged into the agency fields.
