DNR DESCRIPTION (from the agency's own recreation-search record): Situated on the shore of Kingston Lake, this rustic campground offers great opportunities for paddle sports and fishing. Located in Alger County, 18.8 miles southeast of Grand Marais. This campground is managed by Indian Lake State Park . DNR LONGER DESCRIPTION: This rustic campground is situated on a peninsula in Kingston Lake on the northern edge of the Kingston Plains, a sea of stumps that recalls the logging boom of the late 1800s. The campground, almost entirely surrounded by water, is popular with paddlers. The Fox River Pathway takes visitors four miles to Lake Superior or 27.5 miles to Seney. A boat launch and a picnic area are located on the northeast side of the campground. Kingston Lake is the closest state forest campground to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore . Visitors can travel east or west on H-58 directly from the campground to explore the park. There are 16 sites for tent and small trailer use. Camping is limited to a 15-day maximum stay. Amenities include vault toilets and potable water from a hand-pump well. The campground is located 18.8 miles southwest of Grand Marais via H-58. DATA CONFLICT: the DNR's amenity table and the DNR's GIS layer disagree about how many campsites this campground has (amenity table says 16, GIS layer says 0). The amenity-table figure is the one recorded above because it is the maintained public-facing page. Do not publish a hard site count for this campground without confirming with the managing unit. A responsible adult (18 years or older) must register and sleep at the campsite each night. Campsites are for overnight stays. INDEPENDENT (NON-AGENCY) CORROBORATION OF POSITION: an OpenStreetMap query run this review (Overpass, tourism=camp_site or caravan_site within 900 m of the stored coordinates) returns a camping feature 59 m away named 'Kingston Lake State Forest Campground'. OSM is not an authority on fees or opening dates, but it is a source with no connection to the Michigan DNR, and it agrees that a campground physically exists at this location. CAMPSITE-COUNT DISCREPANCY RESOLVED THIS REVIEW (Kingston Lake): the GIS record's TotalNumofSites is 0, which is a missing value rather than a real count. The amenity table says 16 and the DNR prose agrees: 'There are 16 sites for tent and small trailer use.' Use 16. Resolved. REVIEW CAVEATS THAT APPLY TO THE WHOLE BATCH: (1) This is a desk verification against agency publications, NOT a field visit -- nobody from this project has stood at this campground. (2) I did NOT verify current-season gate status, road conditions, fire restrictions or burn bans; the earlier fire's 'NOT CHECKED' note about burn permits still stands. (3) The DNR's own 'Campground closing and opening dates' link embedded in its recreation-search records (.../PRD/Rates/StatewideSFCGFacilityandAmenityMatrix.pdf) returned HTTP 404 when I tried it today, so opening/closing dates could only be verified from the amenity table's 'Seasonal closure dates' column, not from that matrix. (4) The potable-water claim remains the DNR's claim about a developed hand-pump well. No natural water at or near this site is claimed to be potable. DECISION: APPROVED. Both DNR datasets still carry this campground today under the same name, at the same coordinates, with the recorded fee, managing unit, county and seasonal-closure entry; the rule text quoted above is still live on the DNR's pages; and it is not a coordinate duplicate of anything published, held or pending. Setting status='approved' -- publish_camps.py remains the only route to 'published'.

On the agency's books. The land manager inventoried this site, so its existence is not in question — current conditions are. Nobody from here has camped it recently.
