Lander City Park (Lander)

Drive-up · public land · WY · 42.82200, -108.73717
We haven't personally camped here. Everything below is pulled from public land data, USGS maps and OpenStreetMap — a real place on public land, but not field-checked by us. Confirm road conditions, current access, stay limits and fire restrictions before you go.

This is the one the whole idea is built on. Lander sits at the foot of the Wind River Range on WY-789, and the city lets you camp right in City Park, four blocks off Main Street -- tents or an RV, first come first served, no reservation system, and the city's own website says plainly that it is free. Donations to the park are encouraged and you should leave one. The limit is 3 days within any 30-day period, so this is a genuine stopover, not a basecamp for a week in the Winds. Be realistic about the services: the city says they are limited to seasonal restrooms, meaning no hookups and no showers. The county tourism board lists roughly 7 trailer sites plus unlimited tent space, with picnic tables, drinking water and a lot of shade -- good shade is not nothing in July. One rule people get caught by: take your tent down by 9 AM in summer so the crews can mow and water. The park itself is open 6 AM to 11 PM. The deal these towns offer is simple: camp free, and they hope you buy fuel, groceries or dinner in town -- and Lander has a real main street to spend it on. Town rules change often and we have not visited; confirm current rules with the city before you go.

How we know this

Source
municipal park records
Confidence
Researched — The record is detailed and internally consistent, and the coordinates land where the managing agency says this site is.
How it was placed
FREE confirmed by the CITY'S OWN site, landerwy.gov Parks & Recreation > City Park, quoted verbatim: 'City Park features tent and RV/auto camping. This is not on a reservation system and it is first come first served. It is free, but donations to our park are encouraged. Services are limited to seasonal restrooms. Maximum stay is 3 days within a 30-day period. Remove tents by 9 AM in the summer for mowing and watering operations.' Same page gives address 405 Fremont Street, Lander, WY 82520 and park hours 6 AM to 11 PM. NOTE ON RETRIEVAL: landerwy.gov returns HTTP 403 to ordinary fetching and to the Wayback replay; the page text above was read directly from the live city site using a full browser fingerprint, and the quoted words were string-matched in the returned HTML rather than taken from a search summary (SD Lesson 2). Independently corroborated by Wind River Country / Fremont County Travel & Tourism (windriver.org, Lander City Park Public Campground): 'Fees: None', 'Stay Limit: 3 days', 'Capacity: 7 trailer sites, unlimited tent sites', 'Tables/grates Restrooms Drinking water Shade trees Playground', 'Basic amenities only; no hook-ups or showers', '405 Fremont St. Lander, WY 82520'. Coordinates: OSM tourism=camp_site object named 'City Park' at 42.82200,-108.73717, 0.8 mi from the OSM Lander place node. Verified 2026-07-20.

What we don’t know

A land record can put you within a few metres of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.

Before you go

Been here? Tell us what changed. This page is built from public records, so the fastest way it gets better is somebody who has actually pulled in. Road washed out, site gone, gate locked, or it is exactly as described — all of it useful. Send a report →
