Lewis Park Campground (Wheatland)

Drive-up · public land · WY · 42.04760, -104.95333
We haven't personally camped here. Everything below is pulled from public land data, USGS maps and OpenStreetMap — a real place on public land, but not field-checked by us. Confirm road conditions, current access, stay limits and fire restrictions before you go.

Wheatland is the Platte County seat on I-25 between Cheyenne and Casper, and the town lets you camp overnight at Lewis Park, in the 200 block of 8th Street, with no set fee -- everything, including the dump station, runs on donations. Three nights is the requested maximum and there are no reservations; you just turn up. Be clear on what is NOT here, because the camping apps get this wrong: several of them advertise free electric hookups at Lewis Park, and the Town of Wheatland's own page says plainly that there are no electrical or water hookups at the campground. Come self-contained. There IS a dump station, and like everything else it is donation-based, so put money in the box -- a town that asks for nothing is trusting you to keep it worth doing. This is a genuinely convenient I-25 overnight: you are a couple of blocks off the main drag in a real town with groceries, fuel and food. The deal these towns offer is simple: camp free, and they hope you spend a little locally. Town rules change often and we have not visited -- confirm with Town Hall at (307) 322-2962 before you count on it.

How we know this

Source
municipal park records
Confidence
Researched — The record is detailed and internally consistent, and the coordinates land where the managing agency says this site is.
How it was placed
NO SET FEE / DONATION-BASED per the TOWN'S OWN site, townofwheatlandwy.org Departments > Parks, Lewis Park entry, quoted verbatim: 'Overnight camping-Town of Wheatland does NOT accept reservations for camping sites. There is no electrical or water hook-ups at the campground. Three night maximum stay is requested and there is no set fee for the sites. All services, including the dump station are donation-based.' State confirmed on the same page: 'Town Hall: 600 9th St, Wheatland, WY 82201', '(307) 322-2962'. AGGREGATOR CONTRADICTION WORTH RECORDING: Campendium, theDyrt and assorted YouTube listings claim Lewis Park has FREE ELECTRIC / 30-50 amp hookups. The town's own page says flatly there are NO electrical or water hookups. The aggregators are wrong; the town governs. Coordinates: OSM node/5835597415 'Lewis park campground' (tourism=camp_site) at 42.047597,-104.953327, which matches the town's stated location for Lewis Park in the 200 block of 8th Street. Verified 2026-07-20.

What we don’t know

A land record can put you within a few metres of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.

Before you go

Been here? Tell us what changed. This page is built from public records, so the fastest way it gets better is somebody who has actually pulled in. Road washed out, site gone, gate locked, or it is exactly as described — all of it useful. Send a report →
