The land manager lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

FREE camping (no charge for electric hookups OR primitive sites) at Loup Park on Lake Babcock, about 3 miles north of Columbus (3 mi N on 48th Ave, then E on Lakeview Rd ~1/4 mi), run by the Loup River Public Power District. Per the district's own page: 7-day limit per 30-day period, open May 1-November 1 (weather permitting), FIRST-COME / no reservations, and NO dump station or direct water hookups. The district's SECOND free area, LAKE NORTH PARK (4 miles north of US-30 on 18th Ave, about 2 miles northeast), is also free with the same rules -- it just isn't separately mapped here. A genuine 'pull off the highway and camp free' stop right by Columbus on the US-30/US-81 corridor. Alcohol-free; confirm the current rules with Loup Power District (402-564-3171) before you go.

How it was placed
Source: Loup River Public Power District OWN page loup.com/recreation/loup-park-lake-babcock/ (read 2026-07-26): 'Electrical hook-ups and primitive camping available during the summer at no charge'; 'Limit of seven days per month (30-day period) in Loup park system'; open May 1 to Nov 1; 'No reservations accepted'; no dump station / no direct water hookups. Corroborated by the Columbus Telegram (Loup reopened Lake North / Lake Babcock for camping; 'no fee to camp'). Coordinate: OSM camp_site node 11079689605 (tourism=camp_site, operator='Loup Power District', fee=no) 41.496499,-97.383674 = the mapped campground point (NOT the reservoir centroid). The district's second free area, Lake North Park, has no OSM land object (reservoir centroid only -> water trap) so it is disclosed in the field_note, not pinned. Ingest 2026-07-26.
Season
Read from the agency's own season / closure text in this record (data/conditions.py) and checked against the calendar. The words we read are printed under the verdict at the top of the page.
EV chargers

Field check
On the agency's books. The land manager inventoried this site, so its existence is not in question — current conditions are. Nobody from here has camped it recently.
