Maxwell Park Campground (Arlington)

Drive-up · public land · SD · 44.36479, -97.13389
We haven't personally camped here. Everything below is pulled from public land data, USGS maps and OpenStreetMap — a real place on public land, but not field-checked by us. Confirm road conditions, current access, stay limits and fire restrictions before you go.

Arlington sits right at the junction of US-14 and US-81 in Kingsbury County, and the city runs two campgrounds inside the city limits. Maxwell Park is the in-town one, at 101 North Main Street -- the city describes it as convenient to all downtown activities, which is the whole point of this category. Read the free part carefully, because it is a tier and not the whole park: the GRASS AREA FOR TENT CAMPERS IS FREE. The four camper pads (one 50-amp, three 30-amp) are $10.00 per night for the electricity. So if you are in a tent, or you are self-contained and do not need to plug in, you can stay free; if you want power, it is ten dollars. There is a camper dump station at this park. Two honest gaps: the city's page does not state a stay limit, and it does not say how or where to pay, which is unusual enough that it is worth a phone call rather than an assumption -- do not read 'no stated limit' as 'stay as long as you like.' The town's side of this bargain is that you spend a little money downtown while you are here. Be a good guest and it stays free for the next traveler. Town rules change often and we have not visited -- confirm current rules with the City of Arlington before you go.

How we know this

Source
municipal park records
Confidence
Researched — The record is detailed and internally consistent, and the coordinates land where the managing agency says this site is.
How it was placed
Camping rules and price: City of Arlington official camping page, https://cityofarlingtonsd.com/camping , fetched 2026-07-20, which states verbatim "Both are free for non-electrical spots but if electricity is needed the cost is just $10.00 per night." and for Maxwell Park "There is a $10.00/night charge for the electricity and a camper dump station." Free tier = grass area for tent campers; 4 camper pads (1x50-amp, 3x30-amp) are the paid tier. Address 101 North Main Street. No stay limit and no payment method stated on the city page -- that gap is disclosed in field_note rather than guessed at. Coordinates: OSM node 7633859597 'Maxwell Park Campground', tourism=camp_site. NOTE: this lead is 0.33 mi from the Nordland Park lead, inside the usual 0.5 mi dedup radius, but they are two distinct city campgrounds per the city's own page (different addresses, different site counts) -- not a duplicate. fee=0 reflects the genuinely free non-electric tier; the $10 electric charge is stated plainly in field_note. Verified 2026-07-20. Not visited.

What we don’t know

A land record can put you within a few metres of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.

Been here? Tell us what changed. This page is built from public records, so the fastest way it gets better is somebody who has actually pulled in. Road washed out, site gone, gate locked, or it is exactly as described — all of it useful. Send a report →
