New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

FREE primitive camping in West Canada Lake Wilderness, part of New York's Adirondack Forest Preserve (DEC Region 5, the remote Northville-Placid Trail interior of Hamilton County between Piseco and Indian Lake). This is a DEC-designated primitive tent site ('Spruce Lake Tentsite', on Spruce Lake), and New York provides it at NO CHARGE: the DEC page lists the fee as 'Free' and the unit as open year-round, first-come first-served. HIKE-IN: this is a foot-access site in a motor-vehicle-free Wilderness, about 14 feet from a Northville-Placid Trail spur; plan on roughly a 2.5-mile trip in from the nearest public road/trailhead. Note: a lakeshore site right on Spruce Lake (about 27 feet from the water), on a short NPT spur about 2.5 miles in from the nearest public road; the trailhead road (Jessup River Road / Perkins Clearing) closes seasonally. No nearby OSM camp_site node, so DEC's coordinate is the sole source. This is interior Adirondack WILDERNESS, not a developed campground -- there is no campground office, fee booth, hookups, showers or potable water, and no car access to the site itself; do not confuse it with the developed fee state campgrounds the DEC page points amenity-seekers to (Lewey Lake, Indian Lake Islands, and the Piseco Lake campgrounds). SEASON / ACCESS: DEC lists West Canada Lake Wilderness as open YEAR-ROUND, but this is a motor-vehicle-free Wilderness reached only on foot or by canoe, and DEC's live backcountry report (week of 7/23/2026) warns that access from the Jessup River Road (Perkins Clearing) and the Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road is LIMITED in the off-season because those trailhead roads close seasonally. Interior trails hold water and fords can run high after rain or in spring snowmelt. Plan for a self-sufficient backcountry trip and confirm current road, gate and trail status with the Northville office (518-863-4545) before you go. RULES: this is a designated, first-come first-served free site -- no reservation and no fee. Look for the yellow 'Camp Here' disc that marks each designated site. Standard Adirondack Forest Preserve rules apply: camp only at the designated site, keep 150 feet from water/trails/roads unless the site itself is marked closer, and a free Forest Ranger permit is required only if you stay more than 3 nights or camp with a group of 10 or more (arrange it through the DEC Region 5 Northville Office at (518) 863-4545 (Forest Rangers via 911 or DEC dispatch)). DEC prints no other night limit for these sites, so plan around that statewide 3-night default and confirm on site. This is a primitive backcountry site: expect at most a fire ring -- no privy at most sites, no hookups, no showers and no potable water, so carry water or treat what you take from a stream or lake. Pack out all trash, follow Leave No Trace and the DEC fire rules, and store food from bears (this is black-bear country). Confirm current rules, road/trail status and this site's status on the DEC page (dec.ny.gov/places/west-canada-lake-wilderness) or with the Northville office (518-863-4545) before you go; we have not visited.

Researched — The record is detailed and internally consistent, and the coordinates land where the managing agency says this site is.
How it was placed
NY DEC 'Primitive Campsite' GIS layer (https://gisservices.dec.ny.gov/arcgis/rest/services/dil/dil_land_assets_prm_cmp/MapServer/0), ASSET_UID 3939, NAME verbatim 'Spruce Lake Tentsite', ASSET='PRIMITIVE TENT SITE', PUBLICUSE='Y', FACILITY='West Canada Lake Wilderness', REGION 5 (Northville office). DESCRIP/NOTES blank; ACCESSIBLE='N' (no accessibility claim). Coordinate is DEC's own point geometry (WGS84), pulled 2026-07-24 via the layer's /query endpoint (outSR=4326). FREE confirmed on dec.ny.gov/places/west-canada-lake-wilderness (West Canada Lake Wilderness, read 2026-07-24): Fee='Free', open year-round, first-come/first-served; DEC Region 5 Northville 518-863-4545. COUNT DISCLOSURE: GIS tags 13 designated PTS to this facility; the page PROSE says the broader unit has 28 tent sites (and 'Cedar River Flow: 1' where GIS tags 4) -- I ship only the 13 GIS-tagged sites and do NOT claim the rest (lean-to-adjacent / neighbouring-facility / not-in-PTS-layer). WILDERNESS = NO MOTOR VEHICLES: nearest drivable public road is the trailhead; access is on foot or by canoe. ACCESS-COST CHECK (guardrail 2): no entry/day-use/parking/launch fee stated; only the standard FREE Forest-Ranger permit for >3 nights or 10+ groups. PAID-NEIGHBOUR GUARD (Debar rule): the page points amenity-seekers to Lewey Lake / Indian Lake Islands / Piseco Lake fee campgrounds; this site passes all bbox abort-guards. LIVE-CONDITIONS CHECK (DEC Backcountry Information for the Adirondack Park, read 2026-07-24, 'New this week 7/23/2026'): West Canada Lakes Wilderness section -- seasonal closures on Jessup River Rd (Perkins Clearing) & Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Rd, Horn Lake Trail Indian River ford high-water, French Louie Trail wet, Cedar Lakes Trail Stony Creek ford high-water, Sucker Brook Trail unmaintained past the height of ground, beaver flooding South Pond->West Lake->Mud Lake -- access caveats, none closing a campsite. MEASURED GEOMETRY (OpenStreetMap via maps.mail.ru Overpass, 2026-07-24, point-to-vertex): ~27 ft to Spruce Lake (OSM), on/near the water; 13126 ft to the nearest DRIVABLE public road/trailhead; 14 ft to a Northville-Placid Trail spur; access class 'hike-in'. No OSM camp_site node nearby -- DEC point geometry is the sole coordinate source. Plus DEC State Land Camping Rules (dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/state-land-rules): designated-site + 150-foot rule, free Forest Ranger permit for stays over 3 nights or 10+ people. Ingest 2026-07-24.
