Ask about this camp →Bureau of Land Management lists this as a developed campground. Expect marked sites, a fee station or a reservation, and the usual campground rules. The dispersed-camping freedom of the surrounding forest does not apply inside it. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

Confidence
Likely — The record is good enough to put a pin on, but thin in places. Treat the details as a starting point, not gospel.
How it was placed
BLM Socorro Field Office, on the edge of the Carrizozo Malpais lava flow. FEE: BLM lists "Tent Camping - $15." and sites "with water & electric (sites 2-13 and 15), $25." SIZE/HOOKUPS: BLM: "13 of the campsites have 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups and water hookups". SETTING, BLM's words: "Valley of Fires recreation area is located immediately adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow. Approximately 5,000 years ago, Little Black Peak erupted and flowed 44 miles into the Tularosa Basin... The lava flow is four to six miles wide, 160 feet thick and covers 125 square miles." and it "offers both camping and day use." STAY LIMIT, unusually strict and worth reading twice: "After 14 days visitors must relocate at least 25 miles from their original spot. Visitors may not return to that area for 28 consecutive days." SEASON: BLM describes the area as open year-round. NEAREST TOWN: Carrizozo, NM -- BLM: "This nearest location to acquire food and gas is four miles away in Carrizozo." Coordinate is BLM's recreation-service pin (gis.blm.gov, read 2026-08-17). SOURCE: https://www.blm.gov/visit/search-details/10060263/1 | auto:agency-trust 2026-08-18: state agency GIS record with a source URL and coordinates, confidence not low. Fee value is the agency's own, not field-checked. Not field-verified -- confirm access, road conditions and fire rules before you go.

What we don’t know about Valley of Fires Recreation Area
A land record can put you within a few meters of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.
- Road surface & last-mile access
- How many rigs actually fit
- Cell coverage by carrier
- Current fire restrictions
- Whether any water here is drinkable
- Shade & wind exposure
- Noise and who else shows up
- Whether a listed EV charger works today, or the road miles to it
