The land manager lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

Lordsburg sits right on Interstate 10 in New Mexico's southwest bootheel country, and Veterans Park is a long-standing free overnight stop just off the highway -- a large gravel-and-dirt area that spreads back several hundred yards, with room for big rigs up to about 45 feet, first-come and open year-round at no charge. It is a park, not a campground: there are more than twenty covered picnic tables with charcoal grills under ramadas, drinking water and a trash dumpster, but NO hookups and no showers, so come self-contained. Recent camper reviews through 2024-2026 confirm it is still open and still free. Honest caveats: it is a bare desert lot, it can be windy and dusty, and being an interstate town the overnight policy could change -- there is no City of Lordsburg page confirming it, so the free status rests on consistent recent camper reports; confirm locally if you can. The deal these towns offer is simple: camp free, and they hope you buy fuel, groceries or dinner in town. Be a good guest and it stays free for the next traveler. Town rules change often and we have not visited -- confirm current rules with the town before you go.

Confidence
Likely — The record is good enough to put a pin on, but thin in places. Treat the details as a starting point, not gospel.
How it was placed
Coordinates: OSM way 1232724217 'Veterans Park', tourism=camp_site with fee=no tagged in OSM; pin verified INSIDE the way by point-in-polygon against api.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/way/1232724217/full.json, 2026-07-21. In Lordsburg (Hidalgo Co) just off I-10. FREE status from consistent and RECENT (2024-2026) undisputed camper sourcing: Campendium (veterans-park-lordsburg-nm), The Dyrt, RV Life and sekr.com all describe a free, no-fee, first-come, year-round gravel/dirt overnight area with drinking water, a trash dumpster and 20+ covered picnic tables with grills, RVs to ~45 ft, no hookups. OSM's own fee=no tag agrees. No City of Lordsburg web page for it was found -> confidence='med' (an I-10 town whose policy could change; the recent reviews are why it is not lower). Not visited. Verified 2026-07-21. --- NIGHTSHIFT REVIEW 2026-08-21 (fire 1220, leftover backlog) --- HOLDS UP, AND IT IS THE FRESHEST FREE EVIDENCE IN THIS BATCH. Re-read the Campendium listing for Veterans Park, Lordsburg this fire: 'Last Nightly Rate $0', with the most recent review dated 02 July 2026 -- six weeks before this review, which is exactly the currency the ingest wanted for an I-10 town whose policy could change. OSM way 1232724217 'Veterans Park' still live (v3) and still tagged tourism=camp_site with fee=no at this coordinate. WATER CORRECTION -- CARRY THIS ONTO THE PAGE: the ingest recorded drinking water as an amenity, but a recent review on that same listing says 'The water was off and i desperately needed some.' Do not promise water here; say a tap is reported on site and may be shut off, and tell people to arrive self-contained. Still MEDIUM, no City-of-Lordsburg page. APPROVED.
