Where the camps cluster
Where these came from
Sites come from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's own Primitive Campsite GIS layer, which marks each designated site and flags whether it is open to the public. DEC primitive sites are free, first-come, and carry no reservation.
There is no field guide to this wild forest yet — we write those from sources we can cite, and we have not done this one. The map, the camps and the costs are ready now.
These camps come from state and federal agency records, not from a visit — except where a camp page says otherwise. No boundary is drawn for this wild forest because we do not hold its polygon; the dots are the camps, not the edge of the land. Permits, seasons and fire rules change: confirm with the managing office before you go. Found a fee where we show free? Tell us on the contact page.
