New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

FREE primitive camping: this is DEC-designated tent site 'Bog River Primitive Campsite 2' on the lower Bog River, in the Bog River Complex (Adirondack Forest Preserve, DEC Region 6) -- below the Lows Lower Dam, in the Horseshoe Lake area east of Hitchins Pond. New York provides it at NO CHARGE: the DEC Bog River Complex page lists the unit as 'Fee: Free' and 'Open for Recreation: Year-round', and DEC's own site record marks this a 'Designated Campsite'. It is a first-come, first-served designated site (tents only, marked with a yellow 'Camp Here' disc) with a fire ring and a full-sized pit privy. A free Forest-Ranger permit is required only for stays over 3 nights or groups of 10 or more -- otherwise just show up. There are no hookups and no potable water: bring or treat all water, pack out all trash, follow Leave No Trace and DEC fire rules, and store food from bears. HONEST CAVEATS: DEC's mapping files this point under the Round Lake Wilderness, but it sits on the lower Bog River and its free status comes from the Bog River Complex page; the exact spot is DEC's mapped point (no third-party cross-check), so confirm the site's yellow disc on arrival. The corridor is reached via Route 30 / Route 421 / Lower Dam Road -- we have NOT verified how this specific site is reached, so confirm access and current road/gate status with DEC before you go. (Note: the Lows Lake party-size and June-August landing-permit / reserved-island rules apply to Lows Lake proper, above the dams.) The nearby towns hope you will stop in and spend a little locally while passing through. Rules and site status can change and we have not visited -- confirm current conditions on the DEC page (dec.ny.gov/bog-river-complex) or with the DEC Region 6 Potsdam office / local Forest Ranger at (315) 265-3090 (Mon-Fri 8:00-4:30); Forest Rangers in an emergency via 911 or 1-833-NYS-RANGERS (1-833-697-7264) before you go.

How it was placed
NY DEC 'Primitive Campsite' GIS layer (https://gisservices.dec.ny.gov/arcgis/rest/services/dil/dil_land_assets_prm_cmp/MapServer/0), ASSET_UID 3402, GIS NAME verbatim 'Bog River Primitive Campsite 2', ASSET='PRIMITIVE TENT SITE', PUBLICUSE='Y', DESCRIP='Designated Campsite' (DEC's own positive camping-allowed signal), NOTES='Campsite With Full Sized Privy. Checked 11/2015.', ACCESSIBLE='N'. Coordinate is DEC's own point geometry (WGS84), pulled 2026-07-26 via the layer's /query endpoint (outSR=4326, one paced query -- the DEC GIS host rate-blocks bursts). ATTRIBUTION (disclosed): the GIS tags this point FACILITY='Round Lake Wilderness', but it lies on the LOWER Bog River below the Lows Lower Dam and its free/legal basis is the Bog River Complex, not the Round Lake Wilderness place page (which counts only its own 11 sites and lists the Bog River Complex separately). It was HELD by the 2026-07-23 Round Lake ingester pending exactly this Bog-River-Complex verification; resolved this fire. FREE confirmed on the DEC page dec.ny.gov/bog-river-complex (Bog River Complex, WebFetch 2026-07-26): 'Fee: Free', 'Open for Recreation: Year-round' (the May 1-Sep 30 window is only the Big Tupper/Piercefield Flow easement); the page counts the complex's camping by sub-area (Horseshoe Lake WF 25 / Lows Lake-Bog River Flow 39 / Hitchins Pond 5), all first-come and free, access via Route 30 / Route 421 / Lower Dam Road. CONFIDENCE (MED): existence + designated-status + free-status are each independently confirmed (DEC GIS asset record + DEC page), but the page does not individually name/count these three and the GIS facility tag is imperfect, and there is no OSM/third-party coordinate cross-check (overpass.osm.ch 2026-07-26 -> 0 camp nodes in the bbox, normal for the Adirondack interior) -> MED, not HIGH. PAID-NEIGHBOUR GUARD: OSM tourism=camp_site[fee=yes] sweep over 44.03..44.18 N, -74.75..-74.52 W (2026-07-26) returned 0 -- no fee campground near. ELEVATION ~1726 ft (USGS EPQS, 2026-07-26) -- DEC Region 6, no high-elevation camping restriction. LAND/FEE (guardrail 2): Adirondack Forest Preserve, no entry/access/day-use fee; only a FREE Forest-Ranger permit for stays over 3 nights or groups of 10+. LEGALITY (guardrail 1): DEC-DESIGNATED PUBLICUSE primitive tent site (DESCRIP 'Designated Campsite'; yellow 'Camp Here' disc, tents only), camping explicitly allowed, first come-first served. Ingest 2026-07-26. | auto:agency-trust 2026-08-18: state agency GIS record with a source URL and coordinates, confidence not low. Fee value is the agency's own, not field-checked. Not field-verified -- confirm access, road conditions and fire rules before you go.

What we don’t know about Bog River Primitive Campsite 2 [DEC #3402] (Bog River Complex, lower Bog River)

Is this page wrong about Bog River Primitive Campsite 2 [DEC #3402] (Bog River Complex, lower Bog River)?

This page was built from a public land record, not from a visit. If you have actually pulled in here and it does not match, that is worth more than anything we can read off a map. Tell Dave what is off — it goes to him, not onto the page.

What did you find? Tick anything that fits.

A reader report is not a fact, and this one will not change a word of this page by itself. Dave reads it and checks it against the agency’s own record, because that record is what this site says. If reader reports are ever shown here they are labelled “reader report, unverified” with the date, and they are never merged into the agency fields.
