New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

FREE primitive camping on Valcour Island, a state-owned island in Lake Champlain and part of New York's Adirondack Forest Preserve -- Town of Peru, Clinton County (DEC Region 5), off Plattsburgh. DEC-designated primitive tent site ('Campsite 13'), one of 29 on the island's shores, each with a pit privy and a fire ring. New York provides these sites at NO CHARGE -- the DEC page lists the fee as 'Free'. WATER ACCESS ONLY: Valcour is an island, so you get here by boat, canoe or kayak -- there is no bridge and no drive-up. The nearest and free launch is Peru Dock (a free DEC boat launch on Route 9, parking for 50 cars and trailers), about 2.0 miles across the water from this site in a straight line (your real paddle is longer). Launch from free Peru Dock, NOT from the Ausable Point launch a few miles south -- DEC charges a "day use fee in season" at Ausable Point, while Peru Dock is free. This particular site sits about 120 feet from the shoreline, right on the water. Take Lake Champlain seriously: it is big, cold, open water used by motor boats of all sizes, and wind can build a real chop fast -- check the marine forecast, wear a life jacket, and do not attempt the crossing in a small paddle craft in rough weather. PERMIT (and it is FREE): between Memorial Day and Labor Day DEC restricts all Valcour sites to camping by permit only, first-come and NOT reservable. You cannot get the permit in advance -- you land, set up at any vacant designated site, and the DEC Valcour Island caretaker comes around to issue the free permit. Outside that summer window the standard Adirondack Forest Preserve rules apply (free, first-come, and a free Forest Ranger permit only if you stay more than 3 nights or camp with 10 or more people). DEC's page prints no other night limit for Valcour, so plan around that statewide 3-night default and confirm on site. Questions: leave a voicemail for the Valcour Island caretaker (voicemail 518-897-1298). These are primitive sites: a fire ring and a pit privy, no hookups, no showers and no potable water, so bring water or treat what you take from the lake. Camp only at a designated site, pack out all trash, follow Leave No Trace and the DEC fire rules, and store food from wildlife. The island has about 12 miles of hiking trails (the only marked trails on any of the complex's islands) and the historic Bluff Point Lighthouse on its western shore. Confirm current rules, the permit/caretaker schedule and this site's status on the DEC page (dec.ny.gov/places/lake-champlain-islands-complex) or with the Ray Brook office (518-897-1200) before you go; we have not visited.

Confidence
Researched — The record is detailed and internally consistent, and the coordinates land where the managing agency says this site is.
How it was placed
NY DEC 'Primitive Campsite' GIS layer (https://gisservices.dec.ny.gov/arcgis/rest/services/dil/dil_land_assets_prm_cmp/MapServer/0), ASSET_UID 11468, NAME verbatim 'Campsite 13', ASSET='PRIMITIVE TENT SITE', PUBLICUSE='Y', FACILITY='Valcour Island Primitive Area'; coordinate is DEC's own point geometry (WGS84), pulled 2026-07-24 via the layer's /find endpoint (sr=4326). FREE confirmed on dec.ny.gov/places/lake-champlain-islands-complex (Lake Champlain Islands Complex, read 2026-07-24): Fee='Free', Open for Recreation='Year-round', 'Valcour Island has 29 designated primitive tent camping sites on its shores. Campsites contain pit privies and fire rings', 'Between Memorial Day and Labor Day campsites are restricted to camping by permit only, available on a first come - first served basis', 'All sites require a free permit, which are not reservable'. NOTE THE SLUG: there is no 'valcour-island' page (404); Valcour is governed by the COMBINED 'Lake Champlain Islands Complex' page. GUARDRAIL 2 (no access fee) VERIFIED against DEC's Clinton County boat-launch page (read 2026-07-24): the nearest launch, Peru Dock (DEC coord 44.618758,-73.445511, Route 9, 50 cars/trailers, pumpout), states NO fee, while the same page's Ausable Point entry states 'Day use fee in season' -- so a free public launch sits ~1 open-water mile from the island. COUNT: GIS 25 for this facility vs the page's 29 designated sites -- a SUBSET, all ingestable; a facility-exact filter keeps Schuyler Island's separate 3 sites out and no foreign records leaked in. LIVE-CONDITIONS CHECK (DEC Backcountry Information for the Adirondack Park, read 2026-07-24, stamped 'New this week (7/23/2026): No new updates'): no Valcour closure or restriction listed. MEASURED GEOMETRY (OpenStreetMap `out geom`, 2026-07-24): 120 ft to the nearest Valcour Island shoreline vertex (OSM relation 2333954, 437 vertices) and a point-in-polygon test confirms the site is ON the island; 1.99 mi straight-line to free Peru Dock. No OSM camp_site nodes exist on the island, so DEC's point geometry is the sole coordinate source (no third-party cross-check available). Plus DEC State Land Camping Rules (dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/state-land-rules): designated-site + 150-foot rule, free Forest Ranger permit for stays over 3 nights or 10+ people, arranged via the DEC Region 5 Ray Brook Office at 518-897-1200. Ingest 2026-07-24.

What we don’t know about Campsite 13 (Valcour Island Primitive Area)

A land record can put you within a few meters of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.

Before you go — Campsite 13 (Valcour Island Primitive Area)

Is this page wrong about Campsite 13 (Valcour Island Primitive Area)?

This page was built from a public land record, not from a visit. If you have actually pulled in here and it does not match, that is worth more than anything we can read off a map. Tell Dave what is off — it goes to him, not onto the page.

What did you find? Tick anything that fits.

A reader report is not a fact, and this one will not change a word of this page by itself. Dave reads it and checks it against the agency’s own record, because that record is what this site says. If reader reports are ever shown here they are labelled “reader report, unverified” with the date, and they are never merged into the agency fields.
