Griz Flat (Grizzly Flats) - Wenaha Wildlife Area

Drive-up · public land · OR · 45.94565, -117.45763
We haven't personally camped here. Everything below is pulled from public land data, USGS maps and OpenStreetMap — a real place on public land, but not field-checked by us. Confirm road conditions, current access, stay limits and fire restrictions before you go.

Free camping at Griz Flat, the second of the two designated camping areas named in the Wenaha Wildlife Area rule (OAR 635-008-0170), about a mile down the Grande Ronde road from the wildlife area headquarters near Troy. Like the headquarters it is open YEAR-ROUND, while the rest of the wildlife area closes to the public January 1 through March 31. No fee and no parking permit -- Wenaha is not one of the fifteen ODFW areas where the $8/day parking permit applies. THE RULES, PLAINLY: camping is only allowed in designated campsites, 14 days maximum in any 30-day period. Drive only on open roads and parking areas, with up to 300 feet off an open road allowed to reach a campsite. Campfires only at campsites; no open fires during designated fire closures. Domestic sheep and goats are prohibited. Note there is a muzzleloader shooting range at Griz Flat operated under posted rules, so expect gunfire nearby -- firearms discharge is otherwise only allowed here during authorized game bird and game mammal seasons. HONEST CAVEATS: the coordinate comes from OpenStreetMap, which maps this as 'Grizzly Flats Campground'; the wildlife area rule calls it 'Griz Flat'. We could find no visitor-facing description of the actual sites, so treat it as primitive -- bring water, expect no hookups. Confirm current conditions with the wildlife area office, 541-828-7721, especially in fire season and in winter.

Confidence
Likely — The record is good enough to put a pin on, but thin in places. Treat the details as a starting point, not gospel.
How it was placed
OAR 635-008-0170 (Wenaha Wildlife Area), primary text from Oregon SOS official rules database secure.sos.state.or.us/oard division 2901, retrieved 2026-07-21: camping allowed in designated campsites, 14 days/30, and headquarters + Griz Flat named as designated camping areas with year-round access. FREE: division-wide fee census found the only public-access fee is the 635-008-0053 parking permit ($8 daily/$28 annual), which applies only at the 15 areas whose own rule imposes it; Wenaha's rule does not (affirmative absence, not silence). Per-rule census of 635-008-0170: 'permit' hit = 'is permitted', 'fee' hit = 'feet'; no charge/licence/pass. Rule stable since DFW 138-2022 eff. 09/30/2022; only live division-008 rulemaking (Commission 2026-04-24) touches 635-008-0053/0147 (Sauvie Island beaches) and not this rule. COORDINATE: OpenStreetMap way/1165414812 'Grizzly Flats Campground', tourism=camp_site; point-in-polygon verified INSIDE ODFW ArcGIS Compass/ODFW_Wildlife_Areas/MapServer/0 OBJECTID=36 'Wenaha' (11,234.98 GIS acres, EPSG:4326). What we don’t know

A land record can put you within a few metres of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.

Before you go

Been here? Tell us what changed. This page is built from public records, so the fastest way it gets better is somebody who has actually pulled in. Road washed out, site gone, gate locked, or it is exactly as described — all of it useful. Send a report →
