Wenaha Wildlife Area - Headquarters
Free camping on an Oregon state wildlife area, in the far northeast corner of the state near Troy. OAR 635-008-0170 names the headquarters as one of the Wenaha Wildlife Area's two designated camping areas, and it is one of the few spots here open YEAR-ROUND -- the rest of the wildlife area is only open to the public April 1 through December 31. No fee and no parking permit: Wenaha is not one of the fifteen ODFW wildlife areas that require the $8/day (or $28/year) parking permit. THE RULES, PLAINLY: camp only in designated campsites -- camping anywhere else on the wildlife area is prohibited. 14 days maximum in any 30-day period. Drive only on open roads and parking areas, though you may pull up to 300 feet off an open road to reach a campsite. Campfires only at campsites, and no open fires at all during designated fire closures. Domestic sheep and goats are prohibited (this is bighorn country). HONEST CAVEATS: this pin is ODFW's own wildlife area office location, which is the headquarters site the rule refers to -- the exact campsite may sit a short distance from the building, so look for posted designated sites when you arrive. ODFW's visitor guide lists a campground and restrooms but describes no individual sites, so expect primitive conditions and bring your own water. This is a remote canyon road; call the office at 541-828-7721 before you commit to it.

How we know this
What we don’t know
A land record can put you within a few metres of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.
- Road surface & last-mile access
- How many rigs actually fit
- Cell coverage by carrier
- Seasonal & winter access
- Current fire restrictions
- Whether any water here is drinkable
- Shade & wind exposure
- Noise and who else shows up
