Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

Free camping on an Oregon state wildlife area, in the far northeast corner of the state near Troy. OAR 635-008-0170 names the headquarters as one of the Wenaha Wildlife Area's two designated camping areas, and it is one of the few spots here open YEAR-ROUND -- the rest of the wildlife area is only open to the public April 1 through December 31. No fee and no parking permit: Wenaha is not one of the fifteen ODFW wildlife areas that require the $8/day (or $28/year) parking permit. THE RULES, PLAINLY: camp only in designated campsites -- camping anywhere else on the wildlife area is prohibited. 14 days maximum in any 30-day period. Drive only on open roads and parking areas, though you may pull up to 300 feet off an open road to reach a campsite. Campfires only at campsites, and no open fires at all during designated fire closures. Domestic sheep and goats are prohibited (this is bighorn country). HONEST CAVEATS: this pin is ODFW's own wildlife area office location, which is the headquarters site the rule refers to -- the exact campsite may sit a short distance from the building, so look for posted designated sites when you arrive. ODFW's visitor guide lists a campground and restrooms but describes no individual sites, so expect primitive conditions and bring your own water. This is a remote canyon road; call the office at 541-828-7721 before you commit to it.

How it was placed
OAR 635-008-0170 (Wenaha Wildlife Area), primary text from Oregon SOS official rules database secure.sos.state.or.us/oard division 2901, retrieved 2026-07-21: camping allowed in designated campsites, 14 days/30, and headquarters + Griz Flat named as designated camping areas with year-round access. FREE: division-wide fee census found the only public-access fee is the 635-008-0053 parking permit ($8 daily/$28 annual), which applies only at the 15 areas whose own rule imposes it; Wenaha's rule does not (affirmative absence, not silence). Per-rule census of 635-008-0170: 'permit' hit = 'is permitted', 'fee' hit = 'feet'; no charge/licence/pass. Rule stable since DFW 138-2022 eff. 09/30/2022; only live division-008 rulemaking (Commission 2026-04-24) touches 635-008-0053/0147 (Sauvie Island beaches) and not this rule.
