New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

FREE roadside primitive camping. DEC-designated primitive ROADSIDE campsite ('Moose River Plains Campsite 50') in the Moose River Plains Camping Corridor, part of New York's Adirondack Forest Preserve, in the central Adirondacks between Inlet and Indian Lake, strung along the seasonal Moose River Plains Road -- the Towns of Webb and Ohio in Herkimer County and the Towns of Arietta, Inlet, Long Lake, Lake Pleasant and Morehouse in Hamilton County. This is the classic Adirondack free drive-up corridor: New York provides free primitive roadside campsites (the DEC place page states 116 primitive roadside campsites along the Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road, Otter Brook Road, Rock Dam Road and short spur roads off of them, all free and first-come/first-served) at NO CHARGE (the DEC complex page lists the fee as 'Free'), first-come and cannot be reserved -- you pull off the Moose River Plains Road and camp at a numbered site. ACCESS IS SEASONAL AND GATED: these sites are reached only by the Moose River Plains Road (the Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road), a gated dirt road running roughly 23 miles from the Limekiln Gate near Inlet in the west to the Wakely Dam Gate near Indian Lake in the east. That road is CLOSED outside the warmer months (winter and mud season), so the corridor is NOT drivable year-round -- confirm the CURRENT gate opening and closing dates with the DEC Northville office before you go. DON'T CONFUSE THESE FREE SITES WITH THE NEARBY PAID CAMPGROUNDS: the DEC-operated Limekiln Lake Campground (271 sites, near the Limekiln Gate at Inlet) and Eighth Lake Campground (126 sites) -- developed, reservable, fee-based public campgrounds are separate developed facilities that charge a fee and take reservations -- these numbered roadside sites are the free ones. Camping for more than 3 nights in one spot requires a FREE New York State Forest Ranger permit; a free New York State Forest Ranger permit is required for any stay of more than three nights at one spot, or for a group of ten or more (the DEC complex page states this verbatim; there is no stricter local threshold). Arrange any permit in advance through the DEC Region 5 Northville Office (Mon-Fri 7:30 AM-3:30 PM) at (518) 863-4545. Camp only at the marked site (look for the yellow 'Camp Here' disc), keep camp 150 feet from water unless the site is otherwise designated, and follow the posted Moose River Plains rules. These are primitive sites: no hookups, no potable water, pack out all trash, follow Leave No Trace and the DEC fire rules. Rules, site numbering and the road's gate dates change -- confirm with the DEC unit page (dec.ny.gov/places/moose-river-plains-complex) or the Region 5 Northville office before you go; we have not visited.

Confidence
Researched — The record is detailed and internally consistent, and the coordinates land where the managing agency says this site is.
How it was placed
NY DEC 'Primitive Campsite' GIS layer (https://gisservices.dec.ny.gov/arcgis/rest/services/dil/dil_land_assets_prm_cmp/MapServer/0), ASSET_UID 859, ASSET='PRIMITIVE TENT SITE', PUBLICUSE='Y', FACILITY='Moose River Plains Camping Area'; coordinate is DEC's own point geometry (WGS84), pulled 2026-07-23 via the layer's /find endpoint. FREE confirmed by DEC's own place page (dec.ny.gov/places/moose-river-plains-complex, read 2026-07-23): Fee='Free', 116 primitive ROADSIDE campsites along the Limekiln Lake-Cedar River / Otter Brook / Rock Dam Roads, free and first-come/first-served; and DEC State Land Camping Rules (dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/state-land-rules): camping allowed on Adirondack Forest Preserve, a free permit only for >3 nights or groups of 10+, arranged via the DEC Region 5 Northville Office (Mon-Fri 7:30 AM-3:30 PM) at (518) 863-4545. PAID NEIGHBOURS CLEARED: all 80 GIS records carry FACILITY='Moose River Plains Camping Area' -- the DEC-operated Limekiln Lake Campground (271 sites, near the Limekiln Gate at Inlet) and Eighth Lake Campground (126 sites) -- developed, reservable, fee-based public campgrounds are separate DEC FACILITIES and return 0 records here. COUNT: the GIS /find returns 80 records (80 distinct ASSET_UIDs); the page states 116, so the GIS is an incomplete subset (all ingest, none held, no pin invented). Ingest 2026-07-23. | water 2026-08-24 (fire 1700, NY batch 1): no drinking water. DEC place page https://dec.ny.gov/places/moose-river-plains-complex (read 2026-08-24) lists these roadside campsites' amenities in full -- "most have a picnic table, fireplace and privy" -- and states "There are no hook-ups for water or electricity at campsites", pointing campers who want more amenities at Eighth Lake / Brown Tract Pond / Limekiln Lake Campgrounds. Surface water distance is the true minimum from DEC's own coordinate to USGS NHD high-resolution hydrography (https://hydro.nationalmap.gov/arcgis/rest/services/nhd/MapServer, layer 6 flowline / layer 12 waterbody, queried 2026-08-24); NHD FCODE flow regime carried through verbatim, so an intermittent draw is labelled intermittent. Nothing here is called potable: DEC's 2011 Moose River Plains Wild Forest UMP (https://dec.ny.gov/docs/lands_forests_pdf/mrpwfump1.pdf, Section IV.A.1 Water) says "Visitors must be advised that the water is not considered potable and must be properly treated before consumption." NHD nearest features at this pin: Sumner Stream stream/river perennial 0.10 mi; unnamed lake/pond perennial 0.24 mi; unnamed stream/river intermittent 0.33 mi; Sumner Stream stream/river perennial 0.43 mi. NOT a field check -- no one has stood at this site; NHD is a map layer, not an observation of flow on the day you arrive.

What we don’t know about Moose River Plains Campsite 50 (Moose River Plains Camping Area)

A land record can put you within a few meters of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.

Before you go — Moose River Plains Campsite 50 (Moose River Plains Camping Area)

Is this page wrong about Moose River Plains Campsite 50 (Moose River Plains Camping Area)?

This page was built from a public land record, not from a visit. If you have actually pulled in here and it does not match, that is worth more than anything we can read off a map. Tell Dave what is off — it goes to him, not onto the page.

What did you find? Tick anything that fits.

A reader report is not a fact, and this one will not change a word of this page by itself. Dave reads it and checks it against the agency’s own record, because that record is what this site says. If reader reports are ever shown here they are labelled “reader report, unverified” with the date, and they are never merged into the agency fields.
