The land manager lists this site. Someone from the agency inventoried it, so it is a real camp — not a spot we guessed at. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

The best free campground in South Dakota, and it is not close. Sage Creek is a real National Park Service campground inside Badlands National Park that costs nothing. The park says it plainly: "Sage Creek Campground is a free, first-come first-serve campground with 22 sites located on Sage Creek Rim Road, an unpaved road that may temporarily close after winter storms and spring rains." Cedar Pass, the park's other campground, is the paid one -- the NPS page states "Sage Creek Campground is a free campground and Cedar Pass Campground is paid." WHAT IS THERE: pit toilets and covered picnic tables. That is the list. NO WATER -- the NPS says "Pit toilets and covered picnic tables are available, but not water. Potable water is available at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center." Fill up before you come; the visitor center is a long way back east. NO CAMPFIRES, ever: "Due to fire danger, campfires are not permitted in this campground and collection of wood is prohibited. However, camp stoves or contained charcoal grills can be used." NO GENERATORS -- "Generators are not permitted." SIZE LIMIT: "Motor homes, pull behind trailers, and other recreational vehicles greater than 18 feet in length are prohibited. This limitation does not apply to horse trailers." If your rig is over 18 feet you cannot legally camp here. A portion of the campground is set aside for horse use. THE ACCESS ROAD IS DIRT. Sage Creek Rim Road is unpaved and the park warns it may close after winter storms and spring rains. Badlands mud is famously greasy; do not commit to it in the wet. There is an active prairie dog colony IN the campground -- the NPS calls it out by name and warns that service animals are not allowed in prairie dog areas because of disease risk. Bison range freely here too. Give them a very wide berth. If you want more solitude, the surrounding Sage Creek Wilderness is open to free backcountry camping and the park says "Permits are not currently required for overnight stays in the Badlands backcountry" -- but you must be "at least 0.5 miles from a road or trail" and "must not be visible from a roadway", there is effectively no water out there, and campfires are banned "under any circumstances". How it was placed
FEE + FACILITIES + RESTRICTIONS: National Park Service, https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/campgrounds-badl.htm -- fetched and string-matched in the raw page body this fire via data/fetch_town_page.py. Quotes used: "Sage Creek Campground is a free, first-come first-serve campground with 22 sites located on Sage Creek Rim Road"; "Sage Creek Campground is a free campground and Cedar Pass Campground is paid"; "Pit toilets and covered picnic tables are available, but not water"; "Generators are not permitted"; "Motor homes, pull behind trailers, and other recreational vehicles greater than 18 feet in length are prohibited". BACKCOUNTRY quotes from https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/backcountry-camping-badl.htm . STAY LIMIT: the NPS page states a 14-day limit for Cedar Pass but publishes NO explicit stay limit for Sage Creek -- we do not claim one. COORDINATE: NPS public geospatial service, https://mapservices.nps.gov/arcgis/rest/services/NationalDatasets/NPS_Public_POIs/MapServer/0 -- the only feature in the box 43.885-43.902 N / 102.40-102.43 W with POITYPE='Campground' and UNITCODE='badl' carries MAPLABEL='Sage Creek' at 43.89406764,-102.41393120. Two POITYPE='Restroom' features sit 74 m and 89 m away, matching the pit toilets the NPS text describes. Cross-check: it is the only BADL campground POI other than the one at 43.7434,-101.9498 which is Cedar Pass beside the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, so the identification is unambiguous. CAVEAT: POINAME is null in that layer; the name comes from MAPLABEL. SEASONAL CAVEAT: an archived 2024 NPS news release (https://www.nps.gov/badl/learn/news/temporary-closure-of-sage-creek-campground.htm) records a one-day closure on 25 June 2024 for prairie-dog flea treatment against plague. That is historical, not a standing closure, but short notice closures of this kind clearly recur. Park phone (605) 433-5361. Dedupe: nearest existing row in the database is more than 3 km away. Verified 2026-08-17 01:05:16. | auto:agency-trust 2026-08-18: state agency GIS record with a source URL and coordinates, confidence not low. Fee value is the agency's own, not field-checked. Not field-verified -- confirm access, road conditions and fire rules before you go.
