Baja OHV Travel Management Area
1,335 acres of open badlands on the Buffalo Gap National Grassland between Wall and Interior, free to camp on, with Badlands National Park just up the road. The Forest Service describes it as "open to motorized cross-country travel. The terrain is made up of smooth, rock-covered hills and badlands formations. The area is popular for camping, hiking, 4x4 recreation, and rock collecting." Fees: "No fees are required for this site." NO FACILITIES OF ANY KIND -- the Forest Service lists Restrooms as "none". The page does not mention water at all, so assume there is none and carry your own. THE BIG WARNING IS MUD. The Forest Service says "The area can be muddy and slippery when wet. Watch for ruts." This is badlands clay. If rain is coming, get out before it arrives rather than after -- a 4x4 does not save you from this stuff. Cattle graze here from June to October; the Forest Service asks you to be mindful of grazing operations and close every gate you open. There are active prairie dog colonies, and the Forest Service warns specifically about plague: keep dogs away from the colonies, keep up flea and tick prevention, and see a vet if your dog gets sick. Rockhounding is the draw for a lot of people. Surface collection only, no digging, up to 25 pounds per day and 250 pounds per year, no vertebrate fossils and no artifacts. Once you leave the Baja boundary onto the connecting Conata Basin trail system you must stay on designated trails. Open year-round. Grassland-wide dispersed rules apply -- 14 nonconsecutive days in any 30-day period, 100 feet back from creeks, 300 feet maximum off a road by vehicle. Wall Ranger District, (605) 279-2126. - Surface water mapped nearby: USGS maps White River as a perennial river, ~0.6 mi from the pin (National Hydrography Dataset, data refreshed October 2022). Mapped as perennial is not the same as flowing today. Nobody has checked it for you. Filter or boil anything you drink.
- Ground slope around the pin: about 2.2% — flat. Measured on USGS's 3DEP elevation model (1 m data here), sampled every 10 metres around the point. That is the hillside, not the ground under your wheels — a graded pullout or a bench a few metres across is too small to show up at that spacing, and nobody has checked this one for you.

- Assume no services at all. Most dispersed camping in a national forest has none: no tap, no power, no dump, often no toilet. Everything you need, you bring.
- Power: Dave carries his own — batteries or solar. A generator will run your rig and it is also the thing everybody camped near you can hear.
