Ask about this camp →U.S. Forest Service lists this as a developed campground. Expect marked sites, a fee station or a reservation, and the usual campground rules. The dispersed-camping freedom of the surrounding forest does not apply inside it. What changes is conditions — roads, gates, closures, fire rules. Check those with the unit before you commit to the drive.

Agency-confirmed — The managing agency's own record names this as a campsite and puts it at these coordinates. About as good as it gets short of standing here.
How it was placed
Developed FEE campground (not free) - review | nightshift-verified 2026-08-18: PROMOTED later -> approved. The old note said only "Developed FEE campground (not free) - review" with no source. Sourced today from the Forest Service itself: the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands camping index https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/nebraska/recreation/camping-cabins and the site page https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/nebraska/recreation/steer-creek-campground. Listed "Site Open", open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 23-unit campground in the southeast corner of Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest under ponderosa pines planted in the early 1900s; picnic tables, fire rings, modern vault toilets, 8-stall corral with manure bunk. Overnight Use: Single Site $15/night; fee envelopes and a collection box at the entrance, pay within 30 minutes. Campsites CANNOT be reserved. The 1-mile Blue Jay Trail nature loop starts and ends at the campground. FS-published coordinate 42.68944444,-101.1547222 matches our stored point to ~1 m. WATER: CONTRADICTION ON THE AGENCY PAGE: the description mentions "a hand water pump", but the Facility and Amenity block states "Potable water is not available at this site." Carry your own water and do NOT assume the hand pump is potable.

What we don’t know about Steer Creek
A land record can put you within a few meters of a spot. It cannot tell you any of this — so check it yourself, and treat anything below as the open question it is.
- Road surface & last-mile access
- How many rigs actually fit
- Cell coverage by carrier
- Seasonal & winter access
- Current fire restrictions
- Whether any water here is drinkable
- Shade & wind exposure
- Noise and who else shows up
- Whether a listed EV charger works today, or the road miles to it
